Invisible PR – Is it a thing, or just the latest passing trend?

latest thoughts from Box PRThere is a relatively new kid in town, Invisible PR.

I am a strategic marketeer taking a very pragmatic and systematic approach to my work. What you see is what you get. At times I glide on the water’s surface like a swam whilst frantically paddling under the surface and at all costs I try to avoid being a seagull. I work to a [flexible] framework, interlinked by systems and processes that align towards the bigger picture, goal, strategic forecast. Whilst there is movement, the core values and the basics of marketing and PR remain a constant.

‘Experts’ in their fields love to confuse us mere mortals. Using acronyms, abbreviations, and new terminology, anything to throw us off guard and head over to our favourite search engine to find out more. And, as someone who loves to learn and get more than one side of the argument, search engines are certainly a friend of mine. So, when the term Invisible PR started to appear in my online feeds, it got me thinking: what is it, and what does it mean?

PR is typically linked to making ‘noise’ and this is quite the opposite. When writing this blog, I set out to define Invisible PR, and tell you all about it. Instead, I am not sure it exists and here’s why.

Let’s define ‘invisible’ and ‘PR’.

  • Invisible is defined as unseen or not able to be seen.
  • CIPR define Public Relations (PR) as reputation. It’s the result of what you do, what you say and what others say about you. Its aim is to earn understanding and support, and influence opinion and behaviour.

Now let’s combine them.

Steven Bartlett refers to this as all of those small things that we do as individuals that go towards making us memorable.

Here’s my problem with Invisible PR.

If PR is the result of something, an action, words and item, then without going into too much science I am [almost] certain it’s not possible for it (the action, words, item) to be completely invisible – underlying, inbuilt or even inherent, but not invisible. Every action involves some form of manifestation, whether implied or not.

So how can PR be invisible?

Quite simply, it can’t.

Invisible PR is surely our personality. It’s a choice we make, it’s something deep within us that enables us to do something that makes us more memorable, hopefully for the better.

In the moments that matter most, it’s the small things that count. It’s the way we talk to peers, to management and to our team. It’s how an unhappy customer became a satisfied one, it’s how you managed and brought your team together in a crisis. It could be the person you passed on the street and smiled at, that now has a reason to smile at someone else. That’s you. Your personality. It’s far from invisible, in fact it may shine brightly.

I am not convinced Invisible PR is going to take off, I understand the concept, and maybe I have missed the point but to me this refers to behavioural and personality traits and that’s a completely different topic and subject matter!

Invisible PR = Personal PR. Right?

At Box PR and Marketing, our focus is on making the right noises at the right time on behalf of our clients, aligning all messaging to the core company values and goals.

As always, I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
